AdBlue, also known as "Diesel Exhaust Fuel" (DEF) was introduced together with the Euro4 and Euroe 5 standard.
This meant that vehicle manufacturers had to offer vehicles with lower emissions.
This is done through the use of SCR, selective catalytic reduction, a technique that with the help of a special catalyst and the supply of a purifying liquid - ie the liquid called Adblue. Adblue is, despite its name, a completely colorless liquid consisting of a mixture of deionized water and 32.5% urea.
The fluid is non-toxic and completely harmless for the driver to handle. During combustion, it converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor, which is then emitted together with the car's exhaust gases.
